Contractor records by state
HomeProFax.com holds 501,894 contractor profiles in all 50 states and Washington, DC, with 2,011,488 building permits matched to 42,873 of them. Coverage depends on what each state and city publishes, so this page shows exactly what we hold in each state, how that state licenses contractors, and where to verify.
The quickest check anywhere: ask your contractor for their verified HomeProFax report, then confirm the license with the board listed below.
Featured: Colorado
Colorado is our most complete state for local records: 68,075 profiles, 36,749 with an active license on file (54%), 61,481 building permits from Denver, Boulder and Boulder County on 1,404 profiles, 1,461 Secretary of State registrations confirmed by address, and city license lists from Aurora, Arvada and Thornton.
How licensing works: No statewide general contractor license. DORA licenses electricians and plumbers; cities and counties license general contractors and roofers. That split is why a Colorado check takes more than one lookup, and why our Colorado city pages list each city's own licensing rules.

Other states: limited coverage
In these 45 states we have not yet loaded the state's own licensing records, so profiles come from other states' boards or research. Treat a missing license as "not in our records", not as unlicensed, and check the state's board directly. We keep these pages out of search results until we add the state's own data.

Frequently asked questions
Which states does HomeProFax cover best?
Colorado, California and Texas, where we hold the state license board records. Florida, New York City and Chicago have partial coverage. HomeProFax has 501,894 profiles in all 50 states and Washington, DC, but in most other states profiles come from research rather than that state's own licensing board.
How many Colorado contractors are on HomeProFax?
68,075 Colorado profiles, 36,749 with an active license on file, and 61,481 building permits on 1,404 of them.
Does every state license contractors?
No. California, Florida and Arizona license contractors statewide. Colorado, Texas, New York and Illinois have no statewide general contractor license, so trade licenses or city licenses apply instead. Check the licensing rules for your state and city before you hire.
Why do some state pages say coverage is limited?
In those states we have not yet loaded the state's own license board data. Their profiles come from other states' boards or research, so a missing license there is not evidence the contractor is unlicensed.
