state-board license data

License data comes from the California, Texas and Colorado licensing boards, Washington L&I and Florida DBPR; profiles with business addresses in 45 other states and DC are mostly businesses licensed by those boards or researched profiles — not every state’s own board yet. Data last rebuilt 2026-10-24.

What HomeProFax is — and is not

HomeProFax is a free contractor history report built from public records. Think of the idea behind a vehicle history report, applied to the people you hire to work on your home: instead of relying on a quote, a logo on a truck, or a single review site, you can see the record trail a contractor leaves with licensing boards, building departments, and complaint sources in one place. HomeProFax currently holds 501,894 contractor profiles built from public-record sources, with coverage deepest in California, Texas, and Colorado. Every profile is free to search by business name, owner name, or license number.

HomeProFax is not a contractor, a lead seller, or a guarantee. How Get matched works today: your request is stored on HomeProFax and reviewed for matching against profiles here; no contractor is sent or sold your details today, and we will tell you before that ever changes. How HomeProFax is paid: it is free for homeowners and takes no payment from contractors today — searching and reports are free, and contractors can claim their profile free. We do not perform the work or certify workmanship, and a clean record cannot promise a good outcome. We organize facts scattered across dozens of government websites, show where each came from, and publish our score formula so you can check our math. You still interview the contractor, check references and insurance, and verify the license with the issuing board before you sign.

What a HomeProFax report checks

✓ License
Checked
Status, issuing board, type and expiry where the board publishes them. The board record is the authority.
◐ Discipline & legal
Where available
Board discipline/legal flags where a source publishes them. Federal court items, when shown, are possible matches to verify — a flag is a prompt, not a verdict.
◐ Permits
Where available
Permit history only where selected city open-data portals publish permits naming the contractor. No permits on file can mean no coverage for that city.
◐ Reviews & complaints
Where available
BBB rating/complaints where researched and approved HomeProFax homeowner reviews. Google, Angi, Yelp and Houzz are linked out, not stored or scored.

HomeProFax organizes public records — the state board is the authority. A flag is a prompt to read the board record, not a verdict. Verify license status with the issuing board before you hire.

License status. The report shows matched license records, the issuing board, type, status, and issue and expiry dates where published. Active, expired and not-yet-found are different situations, and the report says which applies.

Permits. Where city open-data portals publish building permits, we show permits naming the contractor of record. Permit coverage covers selected cities, so no permits on file can mean no coverage for that city — the report states that limitation instead of treating silence as a failure.

Discipline and legal flags. Where a board publishes a disciplinary or legal-action flag, we surface it and point you to the board record. A flag is a prompt to read the record, not a verdict, and federal court listings are shown only as possible matches to verify.

Reviews and BBB history. Where researched, we show the BBB rating and complaint history we may store, plus approved HomeProFax reviews. We do not store Google, Angi, Yelp or Houzz ratings; profiles link out so you can cross-check directly.

The score, with its working shown. Each scored profile breaks its 0–100 HomeProFax Score v2 into license status (35 points), discipline and legal flags (20), permit history (20), and reviews (25). Missing data scores neutral where the methodology says so. Read the full rules on how scores work.

How to check a contractor in five steps

1. Search the exact business name. Use the search above, or a license number if the contractor gave you one. Confirm the city and trade match the business you are hiring — similar names are common.

2. Read the license line first. Is a license on file, is it active, and when does it expire? If it is expired or no license was found, pause and ask the contractor to explain before any money moves.

3. Scan permits and flags. Look for permit history on jobs like yours and read any discipline or legal flag in full on the board site. Absence of permits in a city we do not cover is not evidence against the contractor.

4. Read reviews for patterns, not averages. Look at what complaints were about and whether they were resolved — a grade and a complaint count measure different things.

5. Confirm with the issuing board. HomeProFax organizes public records; the board is the authority. A two-minute confirmation on the official register is the final step before you sign. Our guide, how to verify a contractor's license before hiring, walks through each step.

Common questions

Is HomeProFax free?

Yes. Searching and reading a contractor report is free for homeowners. Searching and reading contractor reports is free, and contractors can claim their profile free.

Where does the information come from?

State licensing boards, city permit portals, BBB research, CourtListener, and moderated homeowner reviews submitted on HomeProFax. Every fact keeps its source name, and our data sources page lists them.

What if a report is wrong?

Records can be outdated or matched to the wrong business. Use the corrections process on our disclaimer and corrections page, or claim the profile if it is yours. We check every request against the original source.

Does a high score guarantee good work?

No. The score summarizes public-record factors only and is explicitly not a rating of workmanship. Use it to ask better questions, then verify with the issuing board.
