HomeProFax.com data sources
Every fact on a HomeProFax report comes from a public agency record or a labeled research source, and each report names where its facts came from. This page lists every dataset behind the 501,894 profiles, with the record counts in our published data, the date of our copy, the license or attribution terms, and what each source does not cover.
Totals as of October 24, 2026: 501,894 profiles · 530,329 license records · 2,011,488 building permits on 42,873 profiles · 4,288 profiles with a board discipline flag · 1,927 confirmed business registrations.
Counts are computed from the published profiles, not copied from the agencies. A profile can draw on several sources, so per-source profile counts overlap.

Building permit portals
Permits show a contractor pulling regulated work through a city's inspection system. Each permit lists the contractor of record, which we match to a profile by license number or by name with city and address checks.

| DataSF: Building Permits and Building Permits Contacts | San Francisco, CA | 7,081 | 247,068 | 1990–2026 | DataSF open data terms; source credited on profiles | One permit can list several contractor firms, so the same permit can appear on two or three profiles. |

Reviews, research and court records
| Source | What it covers | In HomeProFax | Our copy | License / terms | Known gaps |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Better Business Bureau | BBB letter grade and complaint count, researched case by case | 50 profiles | Researched July 2026 | We show the grade and link to BBB; full BBB content stays on bbb.org | Only an initial researched set; most profiles have no BBB data and score neutral. |
| HomeProFax homeowner reviews | Reviews written on HomeProFax | Moderated; only approved reviews count | Live | Owned by the reviewer; published with permission | New feature, so few profiles have reviews yet. |
| WhichRemodeler research database | Researched contractor profiles, license numbers and permit links outside our board states | 10,012 profiles cite it | July 2026 | Licensed research data | Older research; facts from it are labeled and not treated as board-verified. |
| U.S. Department of Labor enforcement data (OSHA inspections, Wage and Hour cases) | OSHA inspection and Wage and Hour case records for businesses in Colorado, California, Texas, New York, Florida, Illinois, Nevada and Arizona | 4,852 profiles in 8 states | As of Oct 25-27, 2026 | Federal public data; HomeProFax is not affiliated with or endorsed by the U.S. Department of Labor | Shown only when the business name matches along with the street address, or with the ZIP code or city when the name is unique. Last 5 years shown; an inspection is not a finding of wrongdoing, and these records do not affect the score. |
| CourtListener (Free Law Project) | Federal court records | Shown only as a possible match to verify | Checked per profile | Free Law Project terms | Never changes a score. A name match is not a finding. |
Known gaps and sources not used
- Permit coverage is city by city. The 15 portals above cover a small share of US cities. A profile with no permits may simply work where we have no portal, which is why "none on file" still scores 5 of 20 permit points.
- Profiles include individual licensees. Board rosters list journeymen and master tradespeople as well as companies, so the profile count is higher than the number of contracting businesses.
- Arizona. The Arizona Registrar of Contractors publishes a list of 58,567 current contractors (posting of Oct 20, 2026), but we have not imported it yet, so Arizona profiles do not carry ROC-verified licenses. See Arizona.
- Washington, Oregon and Nevada. Washington L&I license data is matched only to Washington profiles we already hold. The Oregon CCB publishes open license data that we have not imported yet; Nevada's board offers lookup only.
- Florida. The DBPR site blocks automated downloads; we load files only through a manual download and never bypass the block. New Florida businesses are added in batches.
- Illinois. IDFPR publishes no bulk contractor file, and Illinois has no statewide general contractor license.
- Not used: Google, Yelp, Angi and Houzz ratings are not scraped or stored. Google ratings need an API key we do not use today.
