How plumbing licensing works in Texas
Texas has no statewide license for general contractors, but plumbing is different. Plumbers in Texas are licensed by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE). A company that offers plumbing work to the public must have at least one Responsible Master Plumber (RMP) and a current certificate of insurance on file with the board (TSBPE licensee lists).
An RMP must hold a Texas Master Plumber license, be in good standing with TSBPE and carry at least $300,000 of commercial general liability insurance. The RMP is responsible for pulling permits, requesting inspections and making sure everyone on the job holds a current license or registration (TSBPE: Responsible Master Plumber).
Master Plumber license numbers start with the letter "M". Numbers that start with "J" (Journeyman), "T" (Tradesman Plumber-Limited) or "A" (Apprentice) are not Master licenses. TSBPE says the RMP's license number should appear in the company's advertising, and the written estimate and invoice should show it along with the board's name, address and phone number (TSBPE consumer information).
What these Dallas profiles show today
HomeProFax.com has not yet loaded the TSBPE license file, so this page is still being built out. Most of the 16 plumbing profiles above come from the Colorado licensing board (companies and plumbers with a Dallas mailing address who hold Colorado plumbing licenses) or from our research sources. A Colorado license is not a Texas license, and a profile without a Texas license listed here is not evidence that the plumber is unlicensed in Texas.
TSBPE also tells homeowners to check with the local plumbing inspection department, in this case the City of Dallas, to see whether the job needs a permit and inspection. A permit on record shows the work was inspected.
The simple way to check a Dallas plumber
Before you sign or pay a deposit, ask the plumber for their verified HomeProFax report. It puts their license, insurance, permit history and complaint record in one place, so you are not chasing it across several agencies. If a plumber does not have a HomeProFax report yet, ask for their Responsible Master Plumber's name and license number and get the estimate in writing.
